【 摘 要 】
Abstract Introduction This web-based tutorial on full crown preparation is designed to prepare students prior to using DentSim, an advanced virtual-based technology in tooth preparation in dentistry. Methods The tutorial has two parts. The first part provides learners the conceptual understanding of the principles of crown preparation as prescribed by the doctrines of DentSim. The second part demonstrates the step-by-step procedures in the preparation of tooth number 19 in receiving a full crown. The entire module is about 30 minutes long. It contains illustrations and photos that reinforce the textual presentation of the concepts. At the end of the session, learners have the opportunity to test themselves and review the correct answers using the self-assessment quiz that is part of the module. Results The software was pilot tested with 10 dental students prior to implementation. Except for minor navigational concerns and grammatical errors in the content, the feedback was very positive. Currently, this web-based tutorial is being used by 200 first- and second-year students in an elective course in advance simulation at the University of Minnesota. Discussion The tutorial prepares the students on the cognitive aspect of tooth preparation. Students who used this tutorial were demonstrated to spend less time using DentSim. This tutorial is best utilized as apreparatory organizer for dental students prior to using the dental simulation technology. However, it can also be used by dental students for their fixed prosthodontics course.
