【 摘 要 】

This article considers four paintings by Caspar David Friedrich of a national romanticist nature. It examines the role of Rome and Germania’s ancient conflict in these, and briefly considers what may have influenced the artist’s national take on ancient history, including his personal experience of the Napoleonic invasions of his homeland. Friedrich’s transformations of the ancient in his national paintings are an important example of the reception of classical literature in German romanticism.
