【 摘 要 】

The balcony (or window) as a component of theatrical scenery is very commonly used in the Spanish Theatre of the Golden Age, where it represents an intermediary space, a kind of doorstep between the inside and the outside. In all the subgenres of the Comedia it is possible to see the staging of an attempt (finally successful or not) of penetrating into the intimacy of the domestic space (most of the time it is a feminine space), by means of ropes, ladders, etc. This paper tries first to describe the variety of uses of the ‘en alto’ position used on staging. Secondly, it is possible to define more precisely the balcony scene as a moment in a process of an amorous conquest. It is also possible to differentiate two subcategories of balcony scene, depending on the reality of the communication and interaction between the male character (the galán, on the street) and the female character (the dama, upon the balcony): while in the serious plays the communication is difficult, impossible, or violent, in the comic universe the lovers are able to override the obstacle represented by the balcony.
