【 摘 要 】

What were the consequences of French colonization on charity in Algerian Jewish communities? This article examines, first of all, the new approach to charity developed by the members of the consistories in the 19th century: these refer to a new type of philanthropy, presented as more efficient and moral. Yet, charity evolved little compared with the precolonial period. However, charity constituted one of the main activities of the consistories in the 19th century, especially after 1870, when municipalities refused to give help to Jews who became French citizens. Finally, the creation of philanthropic organizations intended to favor the vocational training of young Jews reveals the appropriation, by local elites, of new philanthropic models coming from Europe and adopted by other peoples around the Méditerranée.
