【 摘 要 】
Nadeem Aslam’s novel, Maps for Lost Lovers, focuses on the life of a Pakistani family exiled in Great Britain, in a city inhabited by a heterogeneous community of immigrants who have renamed it Dasht-e-Tanhaii (‘Desert of Solutide’). In order to adopt this new territory as theirs, individuals from various communities impose a Pakistani, Indian or Bangladeshi model, as a palimpsest onto the British space they occupy. Yet finding new roots is difficult and the tensions between the homecountry and the hostcountry are incessant. In this new ‘home’, which does not easily identify as such, the house seemingly stands in an opposition: at the heart of a rejected British space, a protected space emerges, in which traditions are warily preserved as the last defence against threats of contamination from the outside. Analysing this duality, the study will question the possibility for a geographical and metaphorical third space to emerge, which could allow for the establishment of a new type of roots.
