【 摘 要 】
This essay examines the learned practices of the Spanish Republic of letters in the second third of the seventeenth century through the study of the massive manuscript correspondence of the Aragonese chronicler Juan Francisco Andrés de Uztarroz. Beyond the necessary narrative of personal rivalries and courtly ambitions, which features some of the most prominent historians of the time, from Tomás Tamayo de Vargas to José Pellicer, Rodrigo Caro and Lorenzo Ramírez de Prado, the debates which animated this vast epistolary network shed new light on the ethics and etiquette of early modern erudites. Navigating between discussions of the historian’s craft and literary polemics, Uztarroz and his correspondents alternately addressed questions of authority and reputation (of individuals as well as texts), credit (granted or appropriated), respect (earned and lost), and friendship (bestowed and withdrawn).
