【 摘 要 】

Many grammatical items with a spatial and/or a temporal meaning (‘grams’) are the result of a process of grammaticalization which creates complex metaphorical and metonymical chains. Svorou proposes a single path of development which she illustrates through the preposition in front of. She seems to suggest that any ‘gram’ follows this path of evolution. However, the study of the grammaticalized form ahead highlights a different development, especially as regards the source domains of each target domain and the metaphorical and metonymical transfers underlying the grammaticalization of this form. I also suggest a different path for the grammaticalization of in front of than Svorou’s.
