【 摘 要 】

This paper aims to study the uses of gradation forms meaning “better”, “best”, “worse”, “worst” (ἀμείνων, ἀρείων, etc.) in Apollonius Rhodius, between tradition and innovation: the main model is the Homeric model, but Apollonius tends to use mainly, if not exclusively, Homeric forms that have not survived in classical and Hellenistic prose (development of ἀρείων at the expense of ἀμείνων, elimination of χείρων in favour of χερείων, disappearance of κρείσσων and ἥσσων, etc.). This tendency to use what, in the Homeric language, differs from classical and Hellenistic prose, sometimes leads to paradoxical results: for example, the only two occurrences of ἀμείνων in Apollonius, while clearly inspired by the Homeric influence, are, from another point of view, closer to the Homeric uses of ἀρείων than to those of ἀμείνων. Furthermore, the gradation forms κύντερος and κύντατος have largely developed in the language of Apollonius: their meaning has greatly weakened compared to the Homeric model, so they no longer seem very far from functioning as suppletive gradation forms of κακός. This paper also takes into account other influences on the language of Apollonius Rhodius than the Homeric model, which allow several times to better understand some divergences from the language of the ancient epic.
