Industrialization and Social Change in the Rural Vicinity of Gaziantep: The Case of Dülük Village

【 摘 要 】

This article examines the dynamics of social transformation brought about by industrialization in the rural areas at the periphery of the city. For this purpose, the results of a fieldwork carried out in Dülük village, located within the boundaries of Gaziantep, are presented in the paper. The fieldwork was based on participant observation, survey and semi-structured in-depth interviews. The findings of the research show that the residents of Dülük village experienced a process of rapid proletarization. However, since the proletarization process did not include rural-tourban migration, various rural/traditional economic activities and cultural practices continue to mark social life of the village. This situation indicates a hybrid form of social transformation. In this respect, the residents of the Dülük village could be described as “proletarian peasants.” Another observation that needs to be underlined is the fact that Dülük village, due to its peculiar condition, has not experienced any of the negative socio-cultural consequences attributed to industrialization by the theories of social change and transformation. The fact that Dülük village was announced as an archeological site prevented it from undergoing through major ecological and demographic changes. As a result, the villagers are highly satisfied by the social environment they live and do not show a major intention to migrate
