【 摘 要 】

Considered negative when it represents the despoilment of an opponent, hubris can be positive when it contributes to change history through the emergence of an individual who transforms the established power relations. Toussaint Louverture appeared on the French political scene questioning the foundations of the emancipation of slaves and relations between the metropolis and the colonies. The arrival of Napoleon Bonaparte gives hope to supporters in favor of a return to slavery and colonialism. Like inverted mirrors, Napoleon and Louverture are both driven by a desire of recognition, denying the differences in the other, which leads to nemesis, - the divine retribution against the proud – on their downfall. Comparing the hubris of these two historical figures would not only be like questioning the political field where their positions are crucial but also the literary field where the process of their glorification meats identity as while as individual and collective memories.
