【 摘 要 】

In 2011, the commercial channel TLC broadcasted a reality TV show that followed the life of five Muslim families of Lebanese origin living in Dearborn, Michigan. If the channel did not present this program as a controversial subject, All-American Muslim unleashed passions, because it concerns the representation of a minority that has been disparaged in the media for several decades and virtually banned from society after the attacks on September 11th, 2001. Using all the tools of reality television, this series functions as a demonstration in order to confront popular culture’s negative stereotypes. First point: restore the reputation of the Muslim religion. The show systematically dismantles customary images of Islam as a violent, oppressive, and monolithic religion. To accomplish this, the series invites viewers on a voyage inside of Islam, rather than adopting an exterior position sanctioned by several centuries of orientalism. Once Islam is presented as a non-threatening religion, the series gets down to the job of demonstrating the Americanness of the participants, focusing on their desire for integration. It attributes symbols of Americanness to them, from barbecue to the taste for consummation, pushing this claim of identity to make “super-patriots” of certain participants.
