【 摘 要 】

This paper aims to discuss the short story A terceira margem do rio by Guimares Rosa, published in 1962 in Primeiras Estrias, seeking for homological relations with the painting Where we come from? What are we? Where are we going? (1897-1898) by the French paintor Paul Gauguin. This research comes from the observation that both artists, each one in its artistic system, tries to discuss aspects related to essential elements of human being. The means that each one uses to represent it are not limited to an analogical association, but they can be put in parallel. The aim of this article is to seek this point of encounter between both arts in the short story and in the painting quoted.
