【 摘 要 】

Abstract Introduction This resource consists of a series of independent self-directed active learning modules developed using PowerPoint that require active engagement by students in order to successfully complete the activities. The modules address the application of key concepts in medical genetics, including pedigree construction, genetic risk assessment, the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and concordance. In addition, disorders and concepts such as Tay-Sachs, cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and consanguinity are featured. The modules are intended for use as an adjunct to a standard medical genetics curriculum and make use of verification and feedback to enhance the learning experience. Methods The materials provided are intended to be used by students in a self-directed fashion as an adjunct to lectures on medical genetics. The resources include seven pedigree analysis practice cases featuring disorders and concepts. Specific features of PowerPoint were used to generate interactive learning modules that require active engagement by the students. Results As part of our course evaluations, students were asked to list the top three most effective components of the Cell Structure and Function course as an open-ended question. It was determined that students listed these modules in the top 10 of the most effective components of the course. Students also felt that the modules enhanced their ability to apply appropriate tools when assessing genetic inheritance risk, and their understanding of the underlying principles. Discussion The students readily accepted these learning modules and our evidence suggests that they enhance their educational experience. We currently do not track their usage, but our effectiveness data suggest that a substantial portion of the class are using the resource.
