【 摘 要 】

Since literary works of each nation reflect their culture, values and customs, this paper explores Chaucer’s treatment of women in The Legend of Good Women. His persistently fluctuating tone of The Legend has raised the puzzling question of whether he is a passionate defender or a disguised destroyer of good women. The title of the work suggests that this poem is going to be about good women. However, upon close examination of the stories , and in spite of Chaucer’s own claim that he is performing this duty at the behest of Cupid, the reader begins to suspect that there are strong elements of satire in the treatment of women. Critics who believe that The Legend is not a straightforward praise of women, come to this conclusion based on the narrator’s tone in the prologue. In order to understand Chaucer’s true attitude it is necessary to closely examine male-female relationship in all the stories, based on the traditional roles assigned to men and women in love relationship. This paper will argue that Chaucer’s choice of women and their characterization in The Legend will divulge his true attitude.
