Thisessayisanintroductiontothe QuayBrothers'poetics.SinceSeventiestheworksofthetwo filmmakers have investigatedtheundergroundsofimageryproducedbythecollapseofallsymbolic orders.Therearemanyculturalinfluencesinvolvedintheirwork:thesurrealisticcinema,thecentral Europeanliterature (Schulz, Kafka, Walser...), the artisticavant-garde.FollowingShulz'simaginary theoryof the generatio aequivocathe Quay Brothers can show the contingency and the unpredictability of the forms generation. In this way they can putthe rest of symbolic orderson the same level as the basic materials from whichthe generatio aequivocaoriginates.
