【 摘 要 】

The protection of the environment has long meant a strict separation between human activities and the conservation of biodiversity. Instruments such as the granting of the status of "national park" were intended to achieve this goal and to protect such areas of outstanding natural beauty from the ravages of man. This dualism between nature and culture is not however entirely satisfactory. It does not seem possible to adhere to a sustainable development policy that is truly effective and meets with public support without involving local stakeholders and other interested parties in the management of these areas. Socio-cultural usages of the environment are elements in their own right of environmental reality and can help contribute to the creation of a new relationship to the environment. The Calanques of Marseille and Cassis constitute, in this sense, a shining example.
