【 摘 要 】

An unknown drumstick mask from the MRAC collection (Tervuren) raises ethnical and geographical challenges. This paper concentrates on its precise use and specific iconographical attributes (the drumsticks). The mask, named katotoshi, is related to the mukanda ceremonies among the Luba Bena-Mitumba. This feature calls for investigating the presence of other masks, with similar name, use or attributes among other mukanda people that are neighbors of the Bena-Mitumba. Various sources confirm that masks similar to the Bena-Mitumba katotoshi do exist, though with some differences, among the Luba-Samba, the Lwena, the Lunda, the Mbunda, the Luchazi or even the Tshokwe. Finally, based on these data, the history and geographical extension of these drumsticks masks is discussed. The origin of the katotoshi masks is to be seeked among some Lunda groups that mixed specific aspects of circumcision ceremonies with elements from overall beliefs related to funeral rites.
