【 摘 要 】
Preached in 1620-1621, Donne’s two sermons on Matthew 18.7 (“Woe unto the world because of offences”) map out the complexities of spiritual scandals. The various forms of the active and passive scandals delineated in these texts chiefly appear as contagious and reversible. The study of Donne’s “doctrine of scandals” explores how contagion sets in and invades both sermons. Tripping over their own definitions, they become ideologically scandalous texts. This transformation is reflected and enacted by their halting logic, ethics and poetics.
