【 摘 要 】

This study examines the regulations that govern the marriage of women from the Arabian Gulf States and specifically the changes in their status should they marry a non‑citizen of the State. Taking the experience of Kuwaiti women as a case study, this article examines the considerable difference in the treatment of male and female citizens who marry non‑nationals, and aims to highlight aspects of the struggle of these women and their families through a close examination of their attempt to fight the social stigma and discriminatory practices that they have to confront. The case study of Kuwaiti women provides an insight into the workings of legislative and socio‑cultural structures in the GCC, exploring how such structures produce issues of identity formation, guardianship, state control, and the stranglehold of patriarchal kinship practices over individual rights in marriage and family.
