Central Nervous System Infections in Children

【 摘 要 】

Central nervous system infections maintain their importance since they result in morbidity and mortality. In this study findings of 73 patients with central nervous system infection were evaluated retrospectively. Male female rate was determined to be 2.3, and the mean was 4.7±3.7 years (ranging from 3month to13 years). The most common symptoms on admission were fever, vomiting and headache. On physical examination, the most frequently encountered symptoms were meningeal irritation findings and apathy. When patients were classified in terms of clinical and laboratory findings; bacterial meningitis was determined 53.4%, aseptic in 36.9%andtuberculous meningitis in 9.5%. There was mumps infection in 6 patients with aseptic meningitis, post-traumatic meningitis in 8 patients with bacterial meningitis andrecurrent central nervous system infection in 4 patients. The most frequent complications were found to be convulsion, hydrocephalus and the syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion. The mortality rate was determined as 4.1%. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of central nervous system infections are of utmostimportantance for preventing complications and mortalities in children.
