Microscopic investigation of trichomes of wild-growing Satureja montana L.

【 摘 要 】

Considering the importance of S. montana L. as a medicinal plant, due to theessential oils produced in its glandular trichomes, and the lack of dataabout the leaf ultrastructure and micromorphology, we have carried out acomprehensive study of trichomes distributed in the vegetative andreproductive organs. Micromorphological and ultrastructural investigations ofthe glandular trichomes of Satureja montana L. and autofluorescence analysesof their secreted products were carried out using scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confocal laserscanning electron microscopy (CLSM) and light fluorescence microscope. Theleaves, stem and calyx bear numerous nonglandular, unbranched trichomes andtwo types of glandular trichomes - peltate and capitate. Ultrastructuralanalyses showed the presence of mitochondria, plastids and proliferations ofthe granular endoplasmatic reticulum in secretory phases of the heads ofglandular trichomes. Strong red autofluorescence of the lipophilic andhydrophilic secreted material was observed with CLSM. Green-yellowautofluorescence of secreted material were noticed in peltate and capitatetrichomes observed with a fluorescence microscope. [Projekat Ministarstvanauke Republike Srbije, br. 173029]
