【 摘 要 】
The aim of this paper is to analyse how a colonial ideological formation emerges from Padre Antônio Vieira’s discourse. Two aspects are emphasized: 1. In the discursive formation of Portuguese Colonialism related to Brazilian Indians, the Universalist concept, which determines that every single man is free, is dislocated and resifignified in order to adjust to the colonials’ private and contingent interests; 2. In spite of the denunciation against Indian slavery and the courageous defense of Indians, Vieira’s discourse is, in a way, related to the colonial and the ethnocentric ideological formation.
