【 摘 要 】

Using both formal analysis and the framework of critical whiteness studies, this paper studies the role played by lighting in the construction of Ryan Gosling’s persona, focusing on its racial dimension. More specifically, it analyzes the way the star is lit in five films of the 2010s that portray his whiteness as under threat. After a first part dedicated to Drive (2011), which plays a crucial role in shaping the star’s dual persona, the second part of the article examines the different ways in which lighting contributes to building Gosling’s whiteness as “in crisis” in the four following films : The Place Beyond the Pines (2012), Only God Forgives (2013), Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and First Man (2018).
