【 摘 要 】
The article aims to present and analyze four theoretical developments, considered fundamental in the study of representativedemocracyin Brazil: thecompetitiveelitistdemocracy,liberal-pluralistdemocracy,participatory democracy and deliberative democracy. Along with these trends, we discuss about the meaning of representation and participation in modern society. For it was held, at first, a systematic literature review from thereadingofbooks,articlesandthesescoveringhistoricalandconceptualontheconceptsofdemocracy aspects. Theaimistoprovideevidenceto supportandstimulatethedebateaboutdemocracyinthe contemporary context.
