【 摘 要 】
Background: the use of laser in the surgical treatment of periodontopathies is an effective therapeutic option.
Objective: to characterize the results in the use of laser therapy during the surgical technique of the Kirkland flap in patients with adult chronic periodontitis of the moderate and severe types, treated from September 2017 to May 2019 at the “October 3” Dental Clinic.
Methods: a prospective longitudinal descriptive study was performed with the aforementioned patients, at the institution and during the period herein stated. The sample consisted of 80 patients with adult chronic periodontitis of the moderate and severe types, to whom laser was applied during the surgical technique of the Kirkland flap. Treatment response variables were measured in 905 teeth.
Results: the severe form of the disease prevailed (66,25 %). Patients with moderate periodontitis did not report pain seven days after the technique was applied; at six months, dental mobility decreased in 95,38 % of the cases and bone regeneration was observed in 31,38 %; at one year, the pocket depth decreased in 86,15 % of the teeth. In patients with severe periodontitis the pocket depth decreased in 77,5 % of the teeth, dental mobility in 67,2 % of the cases, and 4,31 % showed bone regeneration. None of the cases showed complications.
Conclusions: the combination of laser and the Kirkland technique showed satisfactory results in terms of pain relief, decreased pocket depth and dental mobility, not so for bone regeneration.
