【 摘 要 】
This article explores the forms and functions of Joan Pujol’s epic poem La singular i admirable victòria que per la gràcia de N.S.D. obtingué el Sereníssim senyor don Joan d'Àustria de la potentíssima armada turquesca. This poem was published in Barcelona in 1574 and it was one of the first Iberian literary works devoted to the Battle of Lepanto. The working hypothesis of this article is that Pujol’s poem belongs to an epic paradigm that considered historical truth as the most valuable feature of epic poetry. This paradigm was especially influent and productive in Iberian epic poetry. Pujol’s work proves that the Battle of Lepanto became very appropriate for the writing of a historiographical epic poetry, but it also reveals the need and the difficulty of making compatible and coherent the historical nature of epic poetry with its fictional nature and its propagandistic purposes.
