【 摘 要 】

Laut Sulawesi, or the Celebes Sea, is a basin enclosed to the north by the Sulu Archipelago and Mindanao, to the east by the Sangir and Talaud islands, to the south by the peninsula of North Sulawesi, and to the west by the eastern coast of Sabah. Maritime traffic links the area with the Java, the Flores, and the South China seas and the Pacific Ocean. Today the area is divided among the republics of the Philippines and Indonesia, and the Federation of Malaysia, but in earlier times it was an economic and—to a certain extent—cultural unit overriding present political boundaries. This paper deals with the historical process that brought about the present division.
