【 摘 要 】

In the course of the 19th century, iconographic development is inseparable from the restoring of the French monuments which had suffered during the French Revolution. However, the lithographs were unable to dissociate the monuments from their natural setting. This mixt concept gave birth to the notion of the site. Towards the mid-century, photography added rigor to the inventory, applying it also to the natural environment. These new frameworks of perception had strong influence on environmental and cultural awareness. Regulation and then legislation interfered in that process. But in what order? The analysis of the heritage protection process in France reveals that ideological demands or historical intuition were not necessarily privileged.
