【 摘 要 】

This paper deals with the fantastic techniques recorded in the short story 'The Fall of the House of Usher' by E. A. Poe. Tzvetan Todorov is considered to be a founder of fantastic genre. His research is based on the reader's experience and reception in reading and recognizing fantastic in literature. Other than this, we are going to look into: psychological, biographical, formalistic approaches in reading Poe's work as well as the writing style used in the creating of fantastic atmosphere. Freud, Kortazar, Palavestra and many others dealt with the forms and techniques of fantastic, but we will take into consideration Poe's critical views as well. He thought that the most important goal in the writing is to make an effect on the reader. Every part of the short story, such as defamiliarization, motives, manner of speech should be employed in making this effect. We shall use Poe's teaching with modern critical approaches in order of better understanding of fantastic techniques used in 'The Fall of the House of Usher'.
