【 摘 要 】

Numerous studies have stressed the importance of the residential proximity of family members in southern Europe. Far fewer studies, however, have examined this phenomenon within the upper social classes, where familial proximity reaches record levels, or at the intra-urban level, although forms of familial aggregation are highly dependent on urban context. It is the importance of the impacts of social status and urban structure on familial proximity in southern Europe that this article insists upon, while limiting itself to a specific social group, that of the Neapolitan upper classes. The study is based on a combination of quantitative sources with a series of interviews which have permitted the precise reconstruction of the residential histories of 50 families of the old Neapolitan bourgeoisie within the city over four generations. It was found that although the forms of familial proximity seen within the city’s upper classes (“quasi-cohabitation” within a building and groupings across neighbouring streets) reflect southern European cultural models, they also show strong specific traits, involving as they do massive familial concentrations reproduced over the long term in the same inner-city districts over more than three generations. Other than the “familial” mechanisms of the property market, the heavy spatial concentration of the families studied is also explained by their hereditary hold on the city and their position within a cycle of urban integration.
