【 摘 要 】
Abstract Introduction Complementary and alternative medicine/therapy (CAM) use is common in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Health Statistics Survey of 2007, 38.3% of adults use CAM and 11.8% of children use CAM. From the Periodic Fellows Survey #49 of the American Academy of Pediatrics, pediatricians in residency training, as well as those younger than 42-years-of-age, report less knowledge of CAM therapies than their counterparts. This divergence between patient behaviors and the practitioner's knowledge of such behaviors presents a potential obstacle to effective patient care. To address this challenge, pediatricians in residency should develop a basic understanding of the various CAM therapies, which are evidence-based treatments, and which have potential risks. Methods This full-day intervention is designed to be given once a month to a small group of residents. The purpose of this publication is to create a sustainable educational intervention to increase CAM/integrative medicine knowledge among pediatrics residents in a form that can be applied to all residency programs. Results Thirty-eight residents participated in this intervention from July 2012-June 2013. With this one day curriculum, residents' self-reported knowledge of CAM was increased overall. Before the intervention, only 8% of the residents felt that they had high average knowledge of CAM. After one day of this CAM education, 89% felt that they had high average knowledge of CAM. With regard to residents' comfort discussing CAM with their patients, before the intervention, 68.4% were not comfortable. After the CAM day, 89% were comfortable. Discussion The majority of residents felt the evidence-based lecture and scavenger hunt were helpful. Overall, residents felt that they were more likely to discuss CAM with their patients and families after this intervention.
