【 摘 要 】
INTRODUCTION: Women abuse is still a taboo subject in modern society. Doctors working in emergency department are most often the first link in the chain of recognizing and providing the first aid to women victims of violence, and, if need be, it is their responsibility to alert relevant services. AIM: The objective of this study was to analyze the abuse of women treated in the emergency department during the period of one year (2014). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this research we used Emergency Department protocols, as well as special protocols on protection of child and woman victims of abuse. RESULTS: 18 women treated in Emergency Department at Petrovac on Mlava Health Centre during the period between 1/1/2014 and 31/12/2014 were documented as victims of domestic violence perpetrated by their married or unmarried partners. Of the total number of women, only 8 (44,4%) sought medical treatment on their own, while the other 10 (55,6%) were brought to the emergency department by the intervening police. All the 18 women (100%) had suffered a form of physical abuse. Among them, 14 women (77,8%) had suffered minor injuries, and 4 (22,8%) serious injuries. All the 18 women (100%) had also experienced a form of psychological abuse, such as insults, belittling, intimidation, restrictions or threats. All the 18 women (100%) reported a history of abuse. In cases of 3 women (16,7%) the abuse previously occured once, while in cases of 15 women (83,3%) the abuse occured repeatedly in the past. 6 women (33,3%) revealed that children were also victims of domestic violence. Among the 18 treated women, only 4 (22,2%) said that they wanted the violence to be documented for the purpose of trial. The other 14 (77,8%) said they didn't want the violence to be documented. Only 2 (11,1%) of the treated women claimed that they would leave the abusing partner, while as many as 16 (88,9%) said they would continue to live with the abusing partner. CONCLUSION: We note that the abuse of the analysed women had most often occurred repeatedly over the years. What can also be noted is the victims' tendency to accept abuse as normal and refuse to leave the abusing partner, or to report or document the violence. Our society and its institutions should do more with the aim of recognizing and responding promptly to such cases.
