【 摘 要 】

This paper aims at initiating an investigation on the process of developing variation employed by Alban Berg in the composition of his Piano Sonata Op. 1. After a brief discussion on the concept of “developing variation”, originally elaborated by Arnold Schoenberg (Berg ́s teacher), the present study analyzes the construction of the main theme of the Sonata, taking into account the several transformations of the primordial idea [Grundgestalt] that is presented in the three initial bars.
