【 摘 要 】
Mainly based on controversy sermons, this paper’s goal is to shed light on the strategies that three reformed preachers – Jean Mestrezat, Pierre du Moulin and David Eustache – chose in order to fight against their doctrinal opponents from 1630 to 1640. After examining the circumstances in which these sermons were produced, it analyses those texts in order to emphasize which styles and types of arguments (logos or ethos) were prioritized. It shows that the three preachers carefully chose their argumentative strategies not according to the sermons topics, but according to the cities they preached in and the people they spoke to. In one case, the explicit doctrinal opponent doesn’t correspond to the actual target of the sermon, as far as we can infer from the corpus of publications it is attached to. More generally this article questions the relationships between various discursive genres, both written (treaty and pamphlet) and oral (sermon and conference), that underpin the controversies between Catholics and Protestants in the first half of the XVIIth century.
