ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Chronic lung disease (CLD), clinically known as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), is a major cause of morbidity in premature newborn and were submitted to oxygen therapy.OBJECTIVE: Immunohistochemical identification of inflammatory molecules in the lung tissue of premature neonates that died with CLD.METHODS: Immunohistochemical analysis of 51 samples of premature newborn lungs – grouped in: without CLD,"classic" CLD and"new" CLD.RESULTS: Neutrophil influx and the number of CD4+ and CD45RO+ cells were higher in the"classic" CLD group (p < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the inflammatory response is mediated by neutrophils and CD45RO+ and CD4+ T lymphocytes in the"classic" CLD.
