【 摘 要 】

Manuscript cataloging is a process which requires more collaboration and expertise compared to published works. Determination of artistic; physical and content characteristics of manuscripts and their classification into correct and standard qualifications require advanced knowledge in cataloging and experiences in the field MARC (21); which was developed for electronic information cataloging; can be used for manuscripts whose metadata standard is high. However; in order to assign physical characteristics which differentiate manuscripts from other printed information resources and information about manuscripts with integrity; the subfields that are included in the field of “300 Physical Description Etc.” and are suggested to be used according to the information resources should be utilized. These fields and subfields will provide important hints for access; storage and protection processes of manuscripts for both manuscript librarians/managers and to users. These data will offer information on developing strategies to manuscript library managers and users about under which conditions manuscripts shall be protected; on what kind of papers they shall be written; what kind of fonts will be used; their frequency and period of use; their type of arrangement; type of writing and criteria for storage. Mentioned data will provide users with the ability to develop more refined scanning strategies and access to the works they wish to research more easily and in a shorter period of time. This study will explain through examples; how to use the physical characteristics field which should be used in the description of manuscripts and contributions to be attained by using this field/subfield in mansucripts cataloging of and bibliographic control as well as achieving incisive access.
