Evaluation of Fever of Unknown Origin: Our Clinical Experience

【 摘 要 】

Introduction: Fever of unknown origin is an important and hard to diagnose health problem since its etiology consists infectious diseases, collagen tissue diseases, and malignancies. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fever of unknown origin cases referred to our hospital with respect to etiological aspect. Materials and Methods: 43 fever of unknown origin cases referred to our hospital between the years 2007-2011 were evaluated empirically. Results: While the average ages of the patients participating in the study were 45 ± 20 (18-77), 19 of them (45.2%) were diagnosed with infection, 10 (23.8%) with collagen vascular disease, and 7 (16.7%) with malignity. While other diagnoses (mediterranean fever, thyroiditis, extended febrile myalgia, mercury intoxication, ulcerative colitis, and Behcet disease) were found to be the reason of fever in 6 of the patients (14.3%), no diagnosis could be established in one patient and henceforth, the fever of the patient decreased gradually. Invasive process needed to be performed in 12 patients (28.5%) in order to establish diagnosis. Conclusion: In the etiology of fever of unknown origin, infection diseases come first. In the diagnostic process, gradual examination in light of detailed story and findings of the physical examination should be carried out. Invasive processes should be resorted at the final phase.
