【 摘 要 】
In the 1950s, Jean Cayrol, a survivor of the Mauthausen camp, creates the concept of “Lazarus literature” designating stories like his own, dealing with the return of the convicts and the life of the survivors of concentration camps. The main interest of these stories resides in their witness value due to a double distance: temporal and fictional. We shall investigate to what extent the concept of Lazarus literature can be applied to Aharon Appelfeld’s novel, The Immortal Bartfuss (1983), which describes the life of a certain Bartfuss in the Israel of the years 1960s-1970s. This novel can be perfectly included in this category as it was defined by Cayrol, without being exhausted by it.
