【 摘 要 】

In recent times, we have witnessed a very intense debate, and I would say, even conflicts of opinions in regard to amendments to the Law on GMO in Serbia. Furthermore, the two meetings have been held: 1) 'International Conference on GMOs - Ethics or Interest?' organized by Civic Initiatives of Serbia without GMOs, Organic Serbia Foundation, Belgrade Festival on Health and the Out-patient Department 'Stari Grad' an held in the assembly hall of the Municipality of Stari Grad (October 17, 2013) and 2) 'Genetically Modified Organisms - Facts and Challenges' held by the Interdepartmental Committee 'Man and Environment' of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (October 22-23, 2013). At both conferences, speakers stated their opinions in regard to this issue. One got the impression, though it was insisted on impartiality, especially at the second conference, that participants in the first conference were a priori against the introduction of GMOs, while the participants in the second conference were in favour of the introduction of GM organisms into the system of cultivation, processing, marketing and consumption. In accordance with the state of the profession represented by the Serbian Association of Plant Breeders and Seed Producers, this Association has been rather marginalised over the past 20 years due to everyting that happend in theis region. Although I know that my opinion will not affect any decision, as a President of the Association, I feel a moral obligation to publicly disclose my personal statement.
