【 摘 要 】

O método do custo de viagem, que permite estimar o valor econômico de um ambiente natural por meio de seu uso para a recreação, foi utilizado para estimar o valor recreativo do rio Araguaia, região de Aruanã, por meio de entrevistas com os turistas que freqüentam a região sazonalmente em julho de cada ano. As informações de julho/2005indicam que os custos incorridos na viagem são influenciados pela distância viajada e pela freqüência anual de visitas. O rio atrai um turismo baseado na natureza, sendo que os visitantes preferem apreciar e utilizar o rio enquanto pescam, bebem ou descansam. Emboraa maioria não tenha conhecimento de processos ecológicos e não saiba o que é planície inundável, mais da metade considera-se usuária dos recursos do rio, em especial a água e o peixe. O valor recreativo do rio Araguaia estimado pelos gastos incorridos por este públicofoi de R$ 17 bilhões ano-1, que embora subestimado em parte pela imprecisão no registro do número anual de visitantes, é alto e confirma a importância de investimentos ambientais que propiciem o conhecimento e manutenção da integridade ecológica do rio Araguaia e da atividade econômica de turismo que ele sustenta.

The travel cost method was used to estimate the economic value of the Araguaia river, in the Aruanã region, through interviews carried outwith tourists who seasonally visit the region every year in July. Information from July/2005 indicates that the travel cost is influenced by the distance and annual frequency of visits. The river attracts nature-based tourism, in which visitors go to Aruanã to appreciate and use the river while fishing, drinking and relaxing. Although most respondents have no knowledge about ecological processes and do not know what a floodplain is, more than halfof tourists consider themselves as users of the river’s resources, particularly the water and fish. The recreational value of the Araguaia river estimated throughout tourists’ expenses is R$ 17 billion year-1. Despite this value having been underestimated by the inaccuracy in the registered number of annual tourists, it is nevertheless high, and highlights the importance that environmental investments be made to promote knowledge and maintain the ecologicalintegrity of the Araguaia river, as well as to maintain the economic activity of tourism, which the ecosystem supports.
