【 摘 要 】

The Grand Tour was part of the education of nobles and magnates in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Before the journey, parents wrote instructions for their sons and their tutors. These instructions included advice on places to visit. One of these was the French court at Versailles. Parents would point out that this was where their offspring should learn etiquette, manners, dancing, make new acquaintances, attend balls, audiences and other events. The article is divided into two parts. The first studies parents’ and tutors’ instructions and the information they contain about Versailles. The second part examines the degree to which this advice was followed, with an analysis of excerpts from two travel journals. The first of these is interesting because it was written by a tutor, Jan Michał Kossowicz, shortly after Louis XIV had moved his court to Versailles. The second was penned by a young nobleman, Józef Jerzy Hylzen, in the 1750s and contains extremely detailed descriptions of the court ceremonial, both secular and religious.
