Two Challenges to the French Republican Model: The Polemic over Veils and the Revolts in the Banlieues

【 摘 要 】

The reluctance of some Muslim students to remove their veils to attend French public schools stirred up an intense debate on the capacity of the French lay model to adapt to new social realities. On the other hand, the revolts that recently took place in the outlying neighbourhoods of many French cities were a hard blow to the image of France as an example of co-existence and social cohesion. In the present article, the authors reflect on the political response to these events, and they consider whether or not these phenomenahave meant a challenge to the French republican model.
