【 摘 要 】
For the investigation of the grain size distribution of the material washedout from the piping, we used 20 samples originating from different places onthe Danube and the Tisza rivers. The grading characteristics of these sampleswere investigated based on selected grain sizes and the uniformity ofgradients. Based on the investigations it has become possible to identifywhich grain size fractions are likely to be washed out, and how tocharacterize those fractions. Based on the grain size distribution curves ithas been made possible to define the boundaries of the zone susceptible topiping. The zone limits of granular soils liquefied by earthquakes and thezone limits of the soil out washed from piping are very similar. Thisapparent correspondence already formerly raised the hypothetic question ofwhether piping occurring during high flood can be simulated by shape tosimilar surface liquefaction phenomena experienced during earthquakes, as inboth cases a volcanic cone is formed through the crater of which water isconstantly issuing, dragging away solid particles.
