【 摘 要 】

The aim of this paper is to relate the possibility of omission of the direct object to the semantic role it plays. Only simple sentences and surface structure, that is, the observable syntactic structure, are considered in this study, and the direct object is defined in exclusively formal terms. It is shown that semantic roles are relevant as a conditioning factor in the possibility of omission of the object. The direct object in the semantic role of Source, Path and Goal cannot be omitted; and in the role of Theme is omissible only in some special situations.
