【 摘 要 】

The present study aims to accomplish a reading of the tale "Civilização” (1892) by Eça de Queirós. Through the analysis of the changes occurred in the protagonist’s library during the narrative, it is possible to observe that the author uses the titles of the books as a textual strategy that shows the ideological change in the main character. As in other works by this author, Literature becomes a character in the Ecian tale.
