【 摘 要 】
In this paper we discuss the role of time in the configuration of healthcare discourse in order to set the theoretical foundations of a rhetorical - narrative model that will help to explain the institutional statements conveyed about the pathological. We follow the path proposed by Paul Ricœur in his book Temps et récit in order to integrate the time variable in an analytical model of the discourses about health and illness. However, Ricœur’s notions of the temporality won’t suffice to fully understand all the elements engaged in public health discourses. The analytical model inspired by the French philosopher views on time and narrative contributes to explain the diachronic axe of discourse (the articulation of the past, the future and the present). Algirdas J. Greimas’ semio-narrative theory, on the other hand, helps to better disclose the sense making mechanism through the description of two key moments of such discourses: the narrative program of the past or disjunctive performance (the reconstruction of a collective memory), and the narrative program of the future or the conjunctive performance (the promise of a future to be reached or to be prevented).
