Sensitivity of vegetables seeds in the assessment of water quality in bioassays

【 摘 要 】

Since seeds tolerate sress levels and their vital functions are correlated to the environment, the study aimed to evaluate lettuce and onions as bioindicators to test water quality, and the parameters to assess water quality vary according to the seasons of the year. First count, germination, and germination speed index tests were performed, as well as growth analyses on the shoot and root system and the mitotic index in seeds grown in the waters of Arroyo Padre Doutor, Southern Brazil. Regarding lettuce, the first count, germination, and germination speed index on Summer and the growth of the shoot and root system on Spring, Winter, and Autumn showed a difference between the samples tested and the control (p<0.05). In turn, the mitotic index showed a difference only on Spring (p<0.05). Using onion, results of the shoot and root system growth differ only on Winter (p<0.05) and the mitotic index showed differences between the results from Spring and Summer. In this study, the cytotoxicity of water from the Arroyo was proven in the locations and periods sampled, where lettuce presented a higher sensitivity and the analyses on growth and the mitotic index presented a higher variation.
