【 摘 要 】

Versailles, whether envisaged as a physical space (palace and gardens) or a place of gathering for the most important figures of European politics, was a must-see site for foreign travellers. Among the visitors were several young men who were later elected as Polish kings, including John III Sobieski, Augustus II, Augustus III, Stanisław Leszczyński and Stanisław August Poniatowski. In the majority of cases, records of their visits to the French court have been preserved. Their reports were written by themselves or by their preceptors, either in the course of their travels or years later. The article looks at two of these accounts, written during the eighteenth century. The first one is a description of the travels of Frederick Augustus, the future King Augustus III, and was written by his preceptor Jan Kos. The second are the memoirs of the last Polish king, Stanisław August Poniatowski, written many years after his Grand Tour. The analysis of both these sources focuses on the description of the palace and gardens of Versailles and the people encountered at court. In addition, it is necessary to compare the narratives. The first is characterized by exuberant and detailed descriptions, addressed to the young traveller’s father, King Augustus II. The second are the reflections of an older man, with an emphasis on interpersonal relations and revealing a much greater artistic sensibility.
