【 摘 要 】

Chronic Poverty and Transient Poverty in the Adja Plateau in Benin: Characteristics and Influence on the Practice of Land Conservation Agricultural Techniques. Adja plateau is one of the main agricultural production zones of the southern Benin, with more than 90% of its population in agriculture. Unfortunately, this zone of higher land pressure is suffering, at the opposite of the theory of Boserup (3) from the persistence of degrading agriculture and environmental degradation. This study is focused on the analysis of the poverty dynamics in all the Adja plateau, in order to characterise the forms of poverty that are important to be taken into account for sustainable agriculture promotion in the zone. The sample used was composed of 122 households for data collection about households' characteristics, their farm size, their assets and their welfare levels in 2000 and in 2007 appreciated by the consumption expenses per adult-equivalent as indicator. Data allowed identifying discriminating factors of chronic poor versus transient poor in the Adja plateau. The education level, number of farms, natural assets, and physical assets were the main discriminating factors of the two forms of poor. Over the period of 2000 to 2007, the transient poverty amount was higher (36.9%) than that of the chronic poverty (28.7%). A low level of natural and physical assets characterized the chronic poverty. On considering the gender analysis, it's revealed that the households headed by women suffered more from chronic poverty (47.1%) than those headed by men (25.7%). As far as agricultural practices are concerned, it's revealed that the chronic poor practice less the land conservation agricultural practices than the transient ones.
