【 摘 要 】

A number of local studies undertaken during the last two decades have undermined the traditional view of the noble origins and status of early modern Castilian urban elites. A more nuanced vision has emerged, one which sees city councils as comprising bourgeois, bureaucrats and merchants as well as hidalgos. Moreover, these newcomers played a much more prominent role in civic government than did titled aristocrats. Municipal offices, and in particular those of regidores (aldermen) played a crucial role in facilitating this path to upward social mobility. This work discusses how the mechanisms of ascent worked and how they changed over time. It also poses some questions concerning three significant problems: the description of civic elites, the social roles of municipal power, and the very notion of upwardly social mobility.
